So… Just What Goes into a Logo Design?

People starting their businesses typically need lots of work done by professionals such as web developers, social media gurus, packaging companies, marketing agencies, graphic designers and copywriters (see my list of recommended partners here). Finding the right professional to do the job can be daunting. So, when choosing whom to work with, look at what they do best. Spend some time researching to find someone who has a similar style to you and whose work you love.

Once you have decided on who will create your business logo, ensure that what you’re getting designed won’t be “borrowed” from Google, or some clip-art website. A good place to start is their website: have a look at their portfolio and read the testimonials. As with all business spending, you want to weigh the cost of logo design against the quality and value you will gain. A logo is one of the most essential parts of your brand’s identity. Quite often it’s the first thing a potential customer or client will see, so it’s essential to have a logo that stands out from the competition and has integrity.  

You might be saying “But why should I pay that much for a logo design when I can get a DIY or template logo design for a lot cheaper and a lot faster?” 

There’s a difference between a professional designer and an “amateur logo maker.” A professional logo designer carries out thorough research into your target market and audience to create a brand that is appropriate and appealing to your customers. They help ensure that your final logo design is distinctive and communicates your brand’s message. Your Logo Design Process

Let’s start by breaking down the process into multiple steps.

1 | The Creative Brief:

I’m here to understand your goals, mission and audience to take your brand to the next level, so it’s essential that I get the right preliminary information from you. My first step in the design process is the “Creative Brief”. These are questions that will help you, and I get on the same page about what you want and need from your logo design. 

2 | Research & Brainstorm:

Now that I have understood what you want in a logo design, I will go away and do some further research and create a mood or inspiration board before creating any concepts. This will illustrate important brand themes such as colours, fonts, graphics, patterns, images and style. We can tweak this until we get to a point where you are confident I have nailed the look you are going for before we I go ahead and start on the concept designs.

3 | Concept Presentation:

Here is where the fun stuff starts, and your new logo begins to take form! All the conversations, emails, researching and brainstorming comes together in the form of three logo concepts which I will present to you, along with notes and mock-ups to further help you understand my thinking behind each concept. E.g., I chose this colour because it reflects the luxury and high-end nature of your products.

4 | Revision Rounds:

Here I get your feedback on the concepts I presented. I might not get it perfect the first go and sometimes it will take a bit of back and forth to get it right, so this is when you’ll provide me with a “round” or revisions. Simply send me an email with a consolidated list of things you would like tweaked. If it’s easier we can book a time to discuss the revisions first, if that makes sense for the success of your project. I then send revised copies (where applicable), and we communicate until you are 100% content with the result.

5 | Final Delivery:

After your logo design has been approved, and the final invoice has been paid, it’s time to deliver the final design! I won’t just send you through some poor quality single format file and then send you packing. You’ll receive a full brand package that includes:

  • Your primary logo and supporting logos/submarks provided in a variety of file formats suitable for both web and printing, including the editable vector (AI/EPS)
  • Supporting elements (patterns or Illustrations – depending on your requirements)
  • Brand style guide booklet containing your brand colour palette, file and font guide

All my client work is backed up on an archive, so should you ever lose your files, simply send me an email I can send them all through again at no extra cost.
